IPDL is the "Inter-process-communication Protocol Definition Language". All messages for plugins and tabs in separate processes is declared in the IPDL language. IPDL can also be used to implement a shared-nothing message strategy for threads within a single process.

This article documents the architecture being developed for multi-process isolation. This architecture is being implemented in the Electrolysis project branch and is not yet part of any Mozilla/Firefox release.
