Mac OS X Build Prerequisites

Removal of "Results of a Build" section

I strongly feel that the "Results of a Build" section should be removed. First of all, this article talks about build prerequisites, and not building itself, and secondly, this topic is already well covered in section 2.2 of Build and Install. -- Andreas Wuest 17:33, 28 November 2005 (PST)

That's fine with me. -- Mark Mentovai 20:27, 5 December 2005 (EST)

It would be helpful if the command needed to apply the patch were included, for folks like myself that use patch so rarely that we have no idea how to make it work. --Sheppy 20:41, 9 August 2006 (PDT)

Universal Build on Intel

I think it should be noted that simply following the instructions using Fink won't work to produce a Universal build, while MacPorts does. This is because Fink does not install Universal builds of libidl and glib, unlike MacPorts. -- Ben Karel 06:38, 26 August 2007 (EST)

Fink Errors

I've seen a number of people reporting this puzzling error in the last several months; now it has been conclusively linked to Fink. We should figure out what's going on (is it just the problem Ben Karel mentions above, trying to cross/Uni build, or more systemic) and fix the Build Prerequisites as appropriate. mento, we should chat when you're back. —sardisson 20:37, 20 September 2007 (PDT)

Quick Start

I added a Quick Start section... The page is getting really long and verbose, and I think it's due for a serious cleanup. In the mean time, I added this section on the basis that the most common use case is (or soon will be) building Firefox 3 on 10.5. It's not a perfect solution (especially if you want to build Suite, Camino, Thunderbird, etc), but it's a step forward. Ideally we should have a generic quick-start template or format for each major platform and project. -- Dolske

PKG_CONFIG path

I had to run

typeset -x PKG_CONFIG=/opt/local/var/macports/software/pkgconfig/0.23_0/opt/local/bin/pkg-config

to get libIDL to be recognized. We may want to put that section back in the page.

Also, 10.5 users should compile mercurial outside of macports, due to the fact that macports requires another install of Python that is broken.
