Code freeze for Firefox 3 Beta 2
Code freeze for Firefox 3 Beta 2 is currently scheduled for tomorrow, Tues Dec 4. The goal is to be code complete by Friday in order to ship Beta 2 prior to Christmas.
Friends of the Tree from Nov 26 meeting
This week’s Friends of the Tree were nominated by Reed Loden, who writes, “I’d like to nominate Michael Ventnor and Teune van Steeg for Friends of the Tree for their excellent work on fixing GTK widget bugs that have existed for years. Their work will make Firefox 3 the best release ever for Linux users.” If you have folks you would like to nominate as Friends of the Tree, send email to Asa Dotzler.
Firefox 2.0.0.10 and 2.0.0.11 released
There was not one but two Firefox releases in the past week. 2.0.0.10 was released on Monday to fix a trio of security issues. 2.0.0.11 was released on Friday, a mere 4 days later, to fix a regression introduced in 2.0.0.10. Turn around speed on the fix has been phenomenal, and hearty congratulations to everyone involved (especially the Build and QA teams).
Canvas 3D: GL power, web-style
Over the past few months Vlad Vukicevic has put together an extension for Firefox 3 that previews what an OpenGL context for canvas could look like. You must be running Firefox 3 Beta 1 (or a later nightly, though compatibility with the nightlies is not guaranteed). Install the extension (Windows, MacOS X x86, and Linux x86 only), then, to allow web content to access the 3D canvas contexts, go into the Add-ons Manager and select Options under the Canvas 3D Extension, and make sure that “Enable 3D canvas in web content” is checked. You must also have a full implementation of desktop OpenGL 1.5 (for the GL ES 1.1 context) and, optionally, OpenGL 2.0 (for the 2.0 context) available. See Vlad’s blog post for (lots) more information.
Mozilla and Firefox market share
John Lilly, Mozilla Corporation’s Chief Operating Officer, has written the first of a series of blog posts about the data we’re seeing about how people use the web. He discusses why Mozilla cares about market share, which can sometimes seem incongruous to a public benefit endeavour whose primary mission is to keep the Internet open and participatory. John also reveals that we believe there are at least 125,000,000 Firefox users in the world with an Active Daily User count of over 42M, indicating that there has been a doubling of Firefox Active Daily Users in the past year. It’s an interesting and very informative read.
Joseph Smarr on high performance JavaScript
Last month Joseph Smarr, Chief Platform Architect at Plaxo, came to the Mozilla office to talk about High Performance JavaScript: Why Everything You’ve Been Taught is Wrong. A video of Joseph’s presentation is now available, and the presentation slides are also online, so check it out.
Extension development 101 video
In case you missed the technical session - Mike Beltzner discussing best practices and design patterns for extensions – it’s now available online. Definitely check it out, great content and questions.
